In a desperate bid to prop up United’s flagging attack Manager Billy Hampson dropped regular wingers Arthur Buckley and Sammy Armes and drafted in two younger players, David Cochrane and John Hargreaves. The move paid instant dividends as the newcomers scored a goal apiece and produced a string of chances for big South African centre-forward Gordon Hodgson to blast his way into the record books with five goals. The best-ever haul by a player in the United shirt.

Hodgson, a prolific scorer at Liverpool, was signed by United in March 1937 from Aston Villa and maintained his goal-getting form at Elland Road, excelling in the League game with Leicester.

United were helped on their way by a freak accident to City’s goalkeeper Sandy McLaren. The man who had had eight goals struck past him at Elland Road four years earlier. After half-an-hour the luckless keeper turned quickly, caught his studs in the ground and tore the tendons in an instep. He was replaced by centre-half Fred Sharman who was beaten within a minute of pulling on the green jersey. Full-back William Frame took over but fared no better as the burly Hodgson set his eyes on goal.

United held a three goal half-time lead and continued to attack relentlessly despite an injury to half-back Jim Makinson, who hobbled off only when the game was safely won.

Hodgson, Cochrane and Hargreaves were joined on the score-sheet by full-back Jack Milburn, who scored from the penalty-spot. City’s consolation goals came from Stan Baines and Jack Bowers, but they were to gain revenue for their hiding by winning 2-0 at Filbert Street the following February.
